EOs, Several Exist, Only Some Are Labelled!
Elector groups, are often disparagingly referred to as a" “machine/slate/bloc,” The implication is that they are all formed in the same way and stifle independent thought and decision-making and often blindly follow instructions from the EO.
In reality, there are two distinct types of candidate support groups. Not all of them will be organized and labelled but they exist. People naturally affiliate with others they are comfortable with.
- Candidate-led model
- candidates come together around a common, usually narrow, agenda
- then they form a group, often unnamed to promote the narrow agenda
- Community-led model
- citizens come together first around shared values, usually broad and community based. Then they often form an Elector Organization.
- then they look for and endorse candidates who broadly reflect those values
The important distinction is whether the
candidates created the organization to
advance their collective agenda, or whether the community organization
existed first and simply recommends candidates
that it considers broadly compatible with its principles.
